The Real Facebook Investing Story: How Advisers and Investors Are Using Social Media

May 21, 2012

With Mother's Day just past us and Father's Day around the corner, those of us that have kids look forward to getting some type of handmade card or some ceramic object that we aren't sure whether they are supposed to be a mug or a tray to hold our jewelry. However, with money still being tight across America, is there a way to use your imagination to make some cool gifts while keeping money in your pockets. I've scoured dozens of different sites, and here are five cool gifts that you could make for under $5.

1.) Candles With Personalized Printing- If you stop in a high end store like Jonathan Adler, a scented candle can cost you almost $60. By getting a candle and a stamp pad you could make something really cool for almost any occasion! (source: The 36th Avenue)

2.) The Photo Jar- Who needs a pricy frame from Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel when you can find a really cool jar from a yard sale or a local store and set up a photo of you, family members, or some cool occasion. (source: inspirewireblog.com)

3.) Recipe Card Holder- Make a thin slit across a small piece of wood. Paint or stain the piece of wood. Stencil a small design on the front of the wood. Slide a recipe card in the slit. It will perfectly hold your recipe while you are busy mixing. This is a great gift for baker, chef or restaurant owner. (source voices.yahoo.com)

4.) Paper Plate Clock- This is a project that kids of almost all ages can help with especially figuring out some really cool patterns of paper plates. With a small clock kit, you can create a really cool gift for a kids room, a teachers gift, or something unique to hang in a play area that you don't have to worry about breaking. 5.) Customized Coasters- For this one, a simple trip down to your local Home Depot or Lowe's will do just fine. Pick up some ceramic tiles and then you can paint, use fabric, or any other part of your imagination to create something cool and special (source: theborrowedabode.com)

There are so many ways we can use our imagination. If you are like me, you just get sick of piling up gift cards in your draw for $25 here and $25 there that you probably won't use anytime soon. Take a look around your house or around a co-workers desk and think about what you could do to make something homemade that they will love on their next birthday! This could be a really smart money move to make here in 2012!
